4th Biennial National
Conference of Music and the Performing Arts (NACOMPA) 2017
May 30 - 31, 2017
THEME: MUSICAL PLURALITY AND THE NIGERIAN
POLITY
At the
dawn of the 21st century, the argument for the primacy of the so-called serious
music has come under a heavy attack. As opinions on meaning and value of music
diverge sharply, a compromise is reached; that instead of a unitary global
typology, there is a plurality of discrete music types that constantly engage
stakeholders in musical creativity, performances, research, education,
technology, polemics, and even governance. Within the known categories of folk,
popular, art, and World Music exist a striking multiplicity of music genres and
sub-genres that define the extent and ‘borders’ of today’s musical plurality. Expressions
and studies in musical diversity are pursued within the real and virtual spaces
provided and regulated by sovereign states and their agents. This conference is
aimed at grilling the features and dynamics of musical plurality and how they
affect the educational, professional, socio-cultural, and economic lives within
the Nigerian political boundaries.
