4th Biennial National Conference of Music and the Performing Arts (NACOMPA) 2017

THEME: MUSICAL PLURALITY AND THE NIGERIAN POLITY
At the dawn of the 21st century, the argument for the primacy of the so-called serious music has come under a heavy attack. As opinions on meaning and value of music diverge sharply, a compromise is reached; that instead of a unitary global typology, there is a plurality of discrete music types that constantly engage stakeholders in musical creativity, performances, research, education, technology, polemics, and even governance. Within the known categories of folk, popular, art, and World Music exist a striking multiplicity of music genres and sub-genres that define the extent and ‘borders’ of today’s musical plurality. Expressions and studies in musical diversity are pursued within the real and virtual spaces provided and regulated by sovereign states and their agents. This conference is aimed at grilling the features and dynamics of musical plurality and how they affect the educational, professional, socio-cultural, and economic lives within the Nigerian political boundaries.

Presidency Begs Nigerians In India To Stay Calm Over Attacks

Other reports have it that nine Nigerians were attacked, all students of Noida International University in India. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has urged Nigerians in India to remain calm and be watchful of their surroundings. Her appeal followed multiple distress calls by Nigerian students in India on concerns over their safety as a result of renewed attacks on them. Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday that the renewed Tuesday attacks on Nigerian students’ in India was uncalled for. While condemning the mob action as unwarranted and deplorable, the SSA noted that the Indian authorities currently had five suspects in custody. Dabiri-Erewa noted that though the situation was calm at the moment, the Indian government has a responsibility to protect Nigerian students in India going about their normal duties.
